Ladies and Gentlemen:
We wish to welcome you to the web site of the Southeast Missouri Regional Planning and Economic Development Commission. This web site provides background information on our Commission and the programs that it operates. The Commission serves seven counties (Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, Iron, Madison, Perry, St. Francois, and Ste. Genevieve) and some 35 communities within the counties.
The Commission works with a broad cross section of local governments, economic development organizations, civic groups, businesses, and individual citizens.
The Southeast Missouri Regional Planning Commission was officially formed on March 12, 1968, by proclamation from then Governor Warren E. Hearnes. In 1974, the Commission became an Economic Development District and changed its name to the Southeast Missouri Regional Planning and Economic Development Commission.
The Commission provides services to local governments, at their request, which will help enhance the livability and economic development base of each county and each community. The role of the staff in each county and municipality differs based upon the needs of that local entity. We hope that the enclosed information will be of assistance to you in understanding the organization and the Southeast Missouri Region.
