Hazard Mitigation Planning

As a result of a mandate by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Commission has contracted with the State Emergency Management Agency to prepare county-wide all-hazard mitigation plans. Initially, Cape Girardeau, Madison, Perry and St. Francois Counties were selected by SEMA for preparation of these plans. Ste. Genevieve County later applied for and received funding from SEMA to prepare that county-wide plan and subsequently contracted with the Commission to prepare this document. SEMA has now indicated that it will provide funding to prepare the plans for Iron and Bollinger Counties, and the Commission’s staff has prepared the applications to SEMA for both of these counties, and SEMA has funded both applications.

In past years, the Commission also contracted with the Local Emergency Planning Commission to prepare a hazardous materials response plan for the Region. The LEPC is working to implement the plan.


Hazard Mitigation Planning Committee Public Meetings

All meetings are open to the public

The Hazard Mitigation Planning Committee (HMPC) is comprised of representatives from jurisdictions participating in the Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP) update and other stakeholders. This committee is responsible for assisting the HMP author with development of the plan and the setting of policies (e.g. participation requirements). This Committee is also responsible for the updating and monitoring of the plan in between updates. If you have any questions about the HMPC or HMP development for your county, please contact Drew Christian (contact information below).

Cape Girardeau County:

No further meetings of the HMPC are planned at this time. Upon review by FEMA, requested revisions to the plan may require additonal meetings. Any future meetings will be advertised here at least one (1) week in advance.

Draft Hazard Mitigation Plans

Public comment is desired for any Draft Hazard Mitigation Plan in development. If you would like to make any comments or leave any feedback for a draft plan, contact Drew Christian. Please provide your county and municipality (if applicable) of residence along with your comment or feedback and any other information you feel should be considered by the HMPC.
